Abstracted Figures
Abstracted Figures explores the intersection of abstraction and figurative work as two powerful means of expressing the complexities and nuances of the human experience. Honoring the distinct styles of the gallery’s founders, the show brings together seven contemporary artists whose work spans emotional, social, and environmental terrain. From Kate Tova’s richly layered mixed-media pieces to Calvin Lai’s disrupted realism and Kacy Jung’s sculptural photographs, each artist offers a unique entry point into themes of identity, perception, and experience.
Curated by Studio 5 co-founder Sara Gallagher, this exhibition features works from artists Jaime Lovejoy, Luke Kraman, Wolfgang Bloch, Kate Tova, Calvin Lai, Kacy Jung, and Tubi Ho.
On view: July 11 - Sept 7
Opening Reception: July 11, 6 - 9pm
Artist Panel Talk: Sept 6, 4 - 6pm

Community Discussion: Transitions
At the start of this year, Sara set out to explore the theme of transition in her artworks, honoring the courage, complexity, and emotional depth that comes with navigating change. Whether it's changing careers, grieving a loss, immigrating, embracing one’s true identity, or one of the many forms that transition takes, it touches all of us.
You’re invited to join us for a community dialogue on transition in a space for active listening, honest sharing, and building solidarity. This larger gathering expands on the smaller discussions Sara has hosted in the past, creating room for deeper communal reflection and connection. She looks at it as an experiment in communal emotional intimacy.
It’s vulnerable and bold to show up in such ways, and wow, do we need more safe spaces for that these days! If you feel the pull to join — we encourage you to follow it!
For those interested, there will also be a photography station set up for after the discussion. Anyone open to being photographed may be included in future drawings inspired by the emotional experiences shared during this gathering. Participation is completely optional.
Wednesday, July 30, 6–8pm.
Come to listen, share, and connect through a deeper understanding of our neighbors and peers.
This inclusive public event is open to all, so please feel free to share.

2nd Friday Music Series: Katsy Pline
Join us for our 2nd Friday Music Series with Katsy Pline.
Katsy Pline is a guitarist and singer living in Berkeley, CA. Her latest album ‘Devotion’ is a record of ambient country music assembled from B-bender guitar, electronics, synthesizers and saxophone. Largely eschewing harmonic development in favor of oceanic feeling, the record stretches the swirling unconscious yearning of heartbreak country into glacial shapes, starlit and blue.
Her radio show on BFF.fm, ‘Heartbreak Ahead: Country-Western and Esoterica’ highlights contemporary and archival country and experimental music from the Bay Area and beyond.
Music runs from 6-7 pm, during the citywide art walk, which runs 5-8 pm.
Come for the art, stay for the music!

Figurative Vignettes Realism Drawing Workshop
Join Sara this summer for a brand new workshop — learn her mixed media graphite and panpastel technique as well as some of the key elements for developing strong conceptual narratives and visual storytelling.
I’m excited for this one for a few reasons — first, I’ve adjusted some of the formatting from my previous workshops to set students up to get even further along in their drawings by the end of it. Second, we’ll have very pointed discussions and Q&As around how to conceptually build a strong narrative and execute that through visual choices and nuances.

Community Discussion: Transitions
Happy Pride, everyone!
At the start of this year, I set out to explore the theme of transition in my artworks, honoring the courage, complexity, and emotional depth that comes with navigating change. Whether it's changing careers, grieving a loss, immigrating, embracing one’s true identity, or one of the many forms that transition takes, it touches all of us.
This work is a direct response to the harm so many in our communities — especially LGBTQIA+ folks, immigrants, and other marginalized groups —have experienced under the current administration’s attacks on human rights. In moments like these, coming together in community is vital.
I invite you to join me for a community dialogue on transition in a space for active listening, honest sharing, and building solidarity. This larger gathering expands on the smaller discussions I’ve hosted in the past, creating room for deeper communal reflection. I look at it as an experiment in communal emotional intimacy. It’s vulnerable and bold to show up in such ways, and wow do we need more safe spaces for that these days! If you feel the pull to join — I encourage you to follow it.
